Expert buying guide
How to choose the right excavator size.
Operating weight is only the starting point. Match the machine to access, digging depth, hydraulic attachments, transport limits and local emissions rules.
| Weight class | Typical work | Key checks |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 tonnes | Small landscaping, narrow access, light trenching | Machine width, transport weight, canopy/cab, variable undercarriage |
| 2–4 tonnes | Residential construction, utilities, landscaping | Zero-tail swing, digging depth, auxiliary hydraulics, quick coupler |
| 4–6 tonnes | Municipal work, road maintenance, rental, heavier trenching | Digging force, stability, cab comfort, service access |
| 6–14 tonnes | Roads, foundations, utilities and general construction | Emissions certification, hydraulic flow, transport dimensions, telematics |
| 15–30 tonnes | Earthmoving, infrastructure and quarry support | Production rate, fuel use, undercarriage life, fleet support and resale |
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the narrowest access width and maximum transport height?
- What digging depth and reach does the job require?
- Will you run a breaker, auger, grapple or tilt attachment?
- Which emissions standard applies in the destination country?
- Where will filters, seals, hoses and undercarriage parts be sourced?
- What is included in warranty and who performs local repairs?
